9. Invasion

I remember a time where I could flip through my mind without encountering strife

I remember a time where I could go for a drive without fear of my life

And I remember a time where I was totally fine with the state of my health

And I remember a time where I could have a glass of wine without fear of embarrassing myself

But then there was you

And I’m pretty sure I was there too

You really threw me a curve

When you invaded my world

With no more warning than hello

I took it as an offense

When you cleared every defense

Just to pull me into your undertow

And I told you time and time again I wasn’t worth this fire

And you told me time and time again that I was a liar

But it didn’t hurt oh no

We just watched each other’s flesh get burnt

I remember way back where I could say this or that without regret or trouble

I remember way back where I could safely pass every muddy puddle

And I remember way back where I could sit still in class without laughing fits

And I remember way back where I just took it as fact that everybody needed to be fixed

But then there was you

And I’m pretty sure I was there too

You really threw me a curve

When you invaded my world

With no more warning than hello

I took it as an offense

When you cleared every defense

Just to pull me into your undertow

And I told you time and time again I wasn’t worth this fire

And you told me time and time again that I was a liar

But it didn’t hurt oh no

We just watched each other’s flesh get burnt

But I’ve started learning

From this burning

That I’m still earning my stripes

And from this burning

I’ve started learning

That it belongs in a special place

To ravage, run and take up space

So keep it close and keep it safe

And keep it crazed

It’s a special kind of fire

So put more wood upon this pyre

And we’ll keep burning til we’re smoking signals shouting out

I remember a time where I would flip through my mind and bore myself to tears

And I remember a time where I would go for a drive and with only empty chairs

Then

You really threw me a curve

When you invaded my world

With no more warning than hello

I took it as an offense

When you cleared every defense

Just to pull me into your undertow

And I told you time and time again I wasn’t worth this fire

And you told me time and time again that I was a liar

But it didn’t hurt oh no

We just watched each other’s flesh get burnt
